Laboratory Ventilation Requirements for Vivarium Cage Systems

Separate room requirements from rack requirements

A central exhaust cage rack is one part of the vivarium ventilation system. The project team should identify which airflow, pressure, filtration, controls, alarms, and verification responsibilities belong to the building system and which belong to the selected rack configuration.

Define the inputs that shape ventilation demand

Record the species, occupied cage count, rack rows, room function, cage-change activity, heat and moisture sources, room pressure intent, and available exhaust information. These inputs give the facility engineer and equipment supplier a common basis for reviewing the room and rack interface.

Review airflow with cage density and room use

Room airflow should not be selected from a generic air-change number alone. Cage type, cage density, room contaminants, temperature and humidity control, operator tasks, door openings, adjacent spaces, and the proposed exhaust path all affect the engineering review.

Plan reliability and maintenance access

Clarify monitoring, alarm response, emergency power or continuity expectations, access to connections and manifolds, planned service tasks, and the process used during an interruption. The final requirements should be coordinated with the facility design and the selected equipment configuration.

Prepare an engineering-ready request

Send a room drawing, cage and rack schedule, proposed connection locations, available exhaust data, pressure intent, operating assumptions, service clearances, and required submittals. Ask every proposal to state its equipment boundary, facility-side assumptions, exclusions, and information still awaiting confirmation.
