Start with a measured room drawing
Record usable room length, width, and clear height together with doors, columns, wall projections, fixed services, floor transitions, and adjacent equipment. Add the delivery route from receiving or cage wash to the final room, including narrow doors, turns, lifts, thresholds, and any area where a loaded rack must change direction. A dimensioned drawing keeps a preliminary rack count from becoming an untested installation assumption.
Build capacity from the cage census
List species, cage family, occupied cage target, spare positions, rack quantity, and expected growth separately. Compare the desired cage density with routine access to each cage row, cage-change workload, bottle handling, and observation tasks. The most useful layout is not simply the arrangement with the highest nominal capacity; it is the arrangement that supports the planned animal-care process and leaves a clear basis for future expansion.
Test operator and service clearances
Show where operators stand to remove cages, change bottles, inspect animals, use a change station, and move carts. Mark the access required for rack connections, controls, filters, plenums, wheels, brakes, and other service points that apply to the selected system. Final clearances must be confirmed against the chosen rack and local facility requirements, so the quote request should ask the supplier to identify operating, service, and installation space separately.
Trace rack movement and cleaning routes
Walk through rack delivery, installation, routine repositioning, cleaning, planned maintenance, and eventual replacement. Check whether a rack can leave its row, turn through the room, pass the door, and reach the wash or service area without blocking animal-care work. Where racks are intended to remain fixed, document how surrounding floors, walls, connections, and inaccessible surfaces will be cleaned and inspected.
Send a quote-ready layout package
Provide the room drawing, cage and rack schedule, proposed rows, bottle-handling preference, cage-change location, utilities or exhaust information, movement route, service constraints, destination country, and expansion allowance. Ask each proposal to return a marked layout that distinguishes equipment footprint, operator aisle, service clearance, facility-side interfaces, and unresolved inputs. This makes competing configurations easier to compare on the same room and workflow assumptions.
